Highlights of BAS 2024 Sclerotherapy Conference

Posted 12th June 2024 by Hilary Furber

The British Association of Sclerotherapists’ one-day conference which took place on 21st May 2024 is an annual event, the only event 100% dedicated to CPD for microsclerotherapy and UGFS practitioners.

Presentations from eminent vein specialists are interspersed with live demonstrations and visits to the sponsor exhibition, and the networking opportunities are superb.   The conference is open to non-members as well as BAS members.

Meeting Overview:

This unique event brought together phlebologists, vascular surgeons and nurses, aesthetic medicine practitioners, interventional radiologists and dermatologists from the UK and abroad.

The first sessions focused on the latest developments in treating leg ulcers featuring guest speakers Mr Michael Wall and Mr Jeremy Crane (consultant vascular surgeons) and Lily Benton RGN.

Aesthetic doctor Martyn King and Miss Catharine McGuinness (consultant vascular surgeon) presented an overview of the new BAS Recommended Curriculum for microsclerotherapy trainers followed by Dr Haroun Gajraj (phlebologist) who discussed his successful Blueprint for managing a profitable practice. Richard Oliver of STD Pharmaceutical Products shared his extensive knowledge of sclerosants and how to reduce adverse events and Dr Martyn King, Chair of the BAS and Vice Chair of the JCCP explained how the upcoming regulation of cosmetic treatments will affect sclerotherapy practitioners. The morning session ended with three case presentations.

The lunch break was enlivened by networking, visiting the sponsor exhibition or attending an optional Basic Life Support Refresher.

Live treatment demonstrations kicked off the afternoon session followed by guest speaker Mr Greg Fulton (consultant vascular surgeon, Cork) whose special interest is in Informed consent & information disclosure. Mr Philip Coleridge Smith (consultant vascular surgeon and president of the BAS) outlined the difference between average sclerotherapy and excellent sclerotherapy, and Mr Alastair Lewis (consultant vascular surgeon, N. Ireland) introduced the new BAS Patient Information Leaflets and Consent Form which will be available to purchase from the BAS website in July 2024.

Delegate feedback:

Dr Haroun Gajraj, phlebologist and Director of The Veincare Academy, shares his impression of the event: “I’ve been attending the BAS meetings for many years now, they just seem to get better and better. They’re small conferences, world experts, and the topics that are covered are the best that I’ve come across for sclerotherapy. Particularly helpful is the networking during the breaks, and we get to speak to the specialists one to one and ask any questions – you get tips and advice that you probably wouldn’t get during the presentations. The exhibitors are great, so all in all it has been a fantastic day. It’s been great to update my knowledge, and it’s the premier event for sclerotherapy in the UK without a doubt.”
