Mr Philip Coleridge Smith (Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Medical Director, British Vein Institute) pioneered the introduction of duplex ultrasonography in the clinical investigation of venous disease in the UK and is an expert in the treatment of venous disease using minimally invasive methods. He led the introduction of UGFS into the UK, and is well known for his many publications on venous disease, particularly those related to the pathogenesis of venous ulceration. Past Editor-in-Chief of Phlebology Journal and past editor of the European Journal for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, he is a sought after Forensic Expert Witness and President of the British Association of Sclerotherapists.
Emma Davies RGN, NIP, Clinical Director Save Face and the Horrington Clinic, Somerset. Specialising in cosmedic medicine and microsclerotherapy since 1998, Emma has made a valued contribution to standards and education in this specialist field, having actively participated on a number of committees including the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Aesthetic Nurses Forum Committee, The British Association of Sclerotherapists (BAS) and the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN).
Dr Haroun Garaj, Phlebologist and Director of The VeinCare Academy, has over 30 years’ experience of treating people with varicose veins, thread veins and other vein complications such as phlebitis, varicose eczema and varicose ulcers. He spent 13 years as a vascular consultant surgeon in the NHS and is fully accredited as a vascular specialist with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom. He left the NHS in 2008 to specialise exclusively in venous disease – the specialty of Phlebology. He was a founder member of the British Association of Sclerotherapists.
Dr Martyn King, Aesthetic Physician, Cosmedic Skin Clinic, Tamworth, is a well-known figure in the world of aesthetic medicine and is director of a highly successful cosmetic clinic. He is Medical Director of ACE Group World, and Treasurer of the British Association of Sclerotherapists.
Claire Judge RGN NIP, clinical nurse specialist, holds specialist sclerotherapy clinics at the Royal Free Hospital and the Mcindoe Surgical Centre in East Grinstead. With over 25 years experience in microsclerotherapy Claire teaches other practitioners, is one of the founding members of the BAS and is still on the board.
PANELISTS:
Dr Stephen Tristram, Associate Specialist Vascular Physician at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and the Hampshire Clinic, has managed the varicose vein and leg ulcer service in North Hampshire since 1976. He was involved in the development of ultrasound guided techniques for the treatment of varicose veins and led a large European study in 2001. He regularly lectures to community groups, district nurses and GP practices on his interests, particularly leg ulcer management. Steve has held the office of Chair of the British Association of Sclerotherapists since 2012.
Mr Zola Mzimba, Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon at the Western Health and Social Care Trust, Northern Ireland, and a Registered Phlebology Sonographer. Mr Mzimba specialises in venous disease, renal failure surgery and vascular access, and performs non-arterial vascular surgery. He is clinical lead for the delivery of varicose vein services in NI.
